When Is the Super Bowl 2027? Date, Location and How It Is Scheduled

The next Super Bowl, Super Bowl LXI, is scheduled for Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, just outside Los Angeles. It will decide the champion of the 2026 NFL season and will be broadcast by ABC and ESPN.

That date makes it the first Super Bowl ever scheduled on Valentine's Day, and the latest in the calendar so far. Here is what is confirmed, how the NFL picks the date and where the game goes next.

Why the Super Bowl is in mid-February

The Super Bowl is played two weeks after the AFC and NFC Championship Games, with an open weekend in between for travel, media week and preparation. Its date therefore depends on how long the regular season and playoffs last.

For decades the game was played in late January. It moved into February in the early 2000s, and when the NFL expanded the regular season from 16 to 17 games in 2021, the whole calendar shifted another week. Since then the Super Bowl has been played on the second Sunday of February, and in 2027 the calendar falls so that the game lands on February 14.

SoFi Stadium hosts again

NFL owners voted unanimously in December 2023 to bring Super Bowl LXI to SoFi Stadium, the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. It will be the stadium's second Super Bowl: it also hosted Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, when the Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in their own building.

The Los Angeles area has a long Super Bowl history. The very first one, in January 1967, was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and the Rose Bowl in nearby Pasadena hosted five Super Bowls.

Atlanta was awarded Super Bowl LXII in October 2024. It will be the city's fourth Super Bowl after the Georgia Dome games in 1994 and 2000 and Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2019.

How Super Bowl hosts are chosen

NFL owners award the game years in advance. Host cities need a large modern stadium, enough hotel rooms for fans, teams and media, and room for a week of events such as the Super Bowl Experience fan festival. Warm-weather cities and domed stadiums dominate the list, although a few cold-weather cities have hosted, including New Jersey's MetLife Stadium in 2014.

Roman numerals and the name

Super Bowl games are numbered with Roman numerals because the season spans two calendar years, so a number avoids confusion over which year the game belongs to. LXI is 61: the 2027 game is the 61st Super Bowl. The only exception was Super Bowl 50 in 2016, which used Arabic numerals because "L" alone did not look right on logos.
